Brussels, Belgium – RSC Anderlecht has added German coach Andreas Patz to their technical staff as an assistant coach, the club announced Friday. Patz, 42, will officially join Jérémy Taravel’s team next Tuesday, bolstering the staff as Anderlecht prepares for a crucial stretch of the season that includes the Belgian Cup final and the Jupiler Pro League playoffs.
Anderlecht, with 34 Belgian league titles, currently sits fourth in the Jupiler Pro League standings. They’ll enter the championship playoffs after two remaining regular season matches. Adding to the stakes, the club has similarly secured a spot in the Belgian Cup final, scheduled for May 14th against Union Saint-Gilloise.
Patz Brings Belgian Experience to Anderlecht
This isn’t Patz’s first foray into Belgian football. He previously worked in the Jupiler Pro League between 2018 and 2020, serving as an assistant coach at both Cercle Brugge and Mouscron. Notably, it was at Cercle Brugge where he first crossed paths with current head coach Jérémy Taravel, who was a player for the club at the time. The two maintained a professional relationship that ultimately led to this reunion.
A Diverse Coaching Career
Patz’s career has been characterized by versatility, encompassing roles as a youth coach, assistant, analyst, and even interim head coach. He began his coaching journey in Germany, starting with the youth setup at the DFB-Stützpunkt from 2012 to 2014. He then moved to FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt, initially with their B-team in February 2014, before becoming an assistant with the U19 squad until June 2016.
Before arriving in Belgium, Patz gained international experience as a head analyst with the Hungarian national team from February 2017 to June 2018, working alongside Bernd Storck. This partnership would continue when Storck brought Patz to Mouscron in September 2018.
Recent Roles in Germany
Following his second stint in Belgium, Patz returned to Germany in August 2020, joining FC Carl Zeiss Jena. He initially coached their U19 team before being promoted to head coach of the first team. During his time at Jena, he led the team to a regional cup victory.
Most recently, Patz served as the head coach of 2. Bundesliga side Jahn Regensburg for a season. He took over a team struggling near the bottom of the table and, despite securing notable wins against Schalke (2-0), Darmstadt (2-1), and Hertha (2-0), was unable to prevent their relegation. Patz holds a UEFA Pro License, which he earned after successfully completing the DFB coaching course in 2025. He spent time observing training sessions and games at Schalke, as well as visiting teams in Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, and Portugal, to further his professional development.
What This Means for Anderlecht
The appointment of Patz is seen as a strategic move by Anderlecht to strengthen their technical staff and provide support to Taravel. Patz’s experience in both German and Belgian football, coupled with his analytical skills, is expected to be a valuable asset as the team navigates the challenges of the playoffs and the cup final. His familiarity with Taravel, stemming from their time together at Cercle Brugge, should facilitate a smooth working relationship.
Anderlecht CEO Kenneth Bornauw expressed confidence in Taravel’s leadership, stating the club has observed a strengthened dynamic between the players and staff under his guidance, leading to improved results. The club is clearly prioritizing stability and continuity as they aim for success in the remaining competitions.
For Patz, this move represents a return to a league he knows well and an opportunity to contribute to a historic club with ambitious goals. His analytical background and experience in player development could prove particularly useful as Anderlecht looks to build a competitive squad for the future.
The Belgian Cup final against Union Saint-Gilloise on May 14th will be an early test for Taravel and Patz as they gaze to deliver silverware for the Anderlecht faithful. The Jupiler Pro League playoffs will then determine the club’s fate in the pursuit of the league title.
