TURIN, ITALY – Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti provided a cautious update on the availability of striker Dusan Vlahovic ahead of Saturday’s Serie A match against Sassuolo, while also acknowledging a few late fitness concerns within the squad. The update comes as the Bianconeri prepare for a crucial stretch of games as they push for Champions League qualification.
Spalletti addressed reporters on Friday, stating that a final decision on Vlahovic’s inclusion in the squad will be made after a morning assessment. “Vlahovic? We will evaluate it well together, and the squad list will be released soon,” Spalletti said, as reported by multiple sources. “We still have tomorrow morning to assess. A couple of players have experienced some minor discomfort, so we’ll notice how they respond.”
Vlahovic has been sidelined with a muscle injury since November 29th, sustaining the injury during a match against Cagliari. He underwent surgery in London on December 4th and has been steadily progressing in his recovery. Recent reports indicated he was nearing a return to full training, and Spalletti’s comments suggest he is indeed close to being available for selection. However, the coach emphasized a cautious approach, particularly with an eye toward the remainder of the league campaign.
The potential return of the Serbian international would be a significant boost for Juventus, who have relied on Jeremie Boga playing as a false nine in his absence. While Boga has shown promise in the role, Spalletti acknowledged the need for a more traditional center forward to elevate the team’s attacking threat. “We’ll see if we can start with that setup [false nine], but it’s not a definitive plan,” Spalletti explained. “Sometimes, we need to introduce an element of unpredictability, something that disrupts the rhythm of the game and throws the opposition off balance. We are more than 11 players on the field; we are 16! Many matches are decided in the final stages, and that’s where the five substitutions can make a real difference.”
Spalletti also touched upon his tactical flexibility, hinting at the possibility of utilizing Boga as an attacker and Yildiz on the left wing. This suggests a willingness to adapt his approach based on the game’s circumstances and the availability of his players. The coach stressed the importance of having options on the bench to change the dynamic of a match, particularly in tight contests.
Beyond Vlahovic, Spalletti also provided an update on the goalkeeping situation, praising both Mattia Perin and Michele Di Gregorio. Di Gregorio recently found himself out of the starting lineup, but Spalletti believes the time on the bench has been beneficial. “Both are now in a condition to start,” Spalletti stated. “I think this unusual period has been good for Di Gregorio. He’s been doing some different thinking, and I’ve seen him very determined. Whatever decision I make, I expect a positive response from both of them.”
The Juventus manager also briefly addressed the topic of midfielder Fabio Miretti, acknowledging his potential and contribution to the team. “The national team is a stimulus for everyone,” Spalletti said. “He’s a connector in midfield and good at finding space. I think he’s done very well and often helped the team. He probably deserved more playing time from me, given his quality.”
Looking ahead, Spalletti also addressed questions regarding his own future at the club, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. He indicated a willingness to discuss a renewal during the international break, stating, “I think I’ve identified a correct moment, there’s less stress and there’s enough time. I’m fully available to hear what the club wants to tell me.” He emphasized his positive relationship with the players and staff, expressing his contentment with the environment at Juventus.
However, Spalletti was hesitant to delve into specific transfer targets or contract negotiations, stating, “Talking about next year’s players, when they haven’t signed a contract yet… I feel a bit foolish. I said last time there’s plenty of time. But it’s clear that discussions are ongoing, and You’ll see things to be evaluated. I get along very well with these guys, and it seems like they get along with me. I feel good with the entire staff behind the scenes, with the respect, and trust. We’re always moving forward. Who would talk about the transfer market and missing players at my place? I care about my players, and if I had to replace someone, I would be sorry.”
