Alessandria, Italy – A highly anticipated return to competitive racing ended in frustration for Alex Schwazer at the Italian National Race Walking Championships on Sunday. The Olympic medalist was hampered by multiple technical penalties during the half marathon event, ultimately leading to his withdrawal from the race. Meanwhile, Riccardo Orsoni and Sofia Fiorini claimed the national titles in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.
Schwazer, competing in his first Italian championship since completing an eight-year doping suspension, showed early promise, maintaining pace with race leaders Riccardo Orsoni and Gianluca Picchiottino. The event, held in Alessandria, served as a key preparation race for the upcoming World Team Championships in Brasilia (April 12) and the European Championships in Birmingham (August 10-16). The half marathon distance (21.097 km) is a relatively new addition to the race walking calendar, having officially replaced the 20km event on January 1st.
Despite a strong start, Schwazer’s race began to unravel as he received multiple warnings from race judges for technical infractions. According to reports, the penalties stemmed from issues with his walking form. The rules stipulate a stop of three minutes after three technical warnings. After serving the penalty, Schwazer attempted to continue, but ultimately decided to withdraw from the competition.
“He had a gait that was too unbalanced forward,” explained coach Sandro Donati, as reported by Il Piccolo. “This caused him to lift his leg too much behind him. The judges did their job. If he had slowed down, he probably would have reached the podium, but champions are made like this: they only think about winning.”
The men’s race ultimately saw Riccardo Orsoni secure the gold medal with a time of 1 hour, 24 minutes, and 25 seconds. Gianluca Picchiottino finished second in 1:25:19. Giuseppe Disabato claimed the Italian under-23 title, finishing third overall.
In the women’s race, Sofia Fiorini dominated, finishing in a time of 1 hour, 34 minutes, and 15 seconds. She established a significant lead midway through the race and was never seriously challenged. Alexandrina Mihai finished second in 1:36:41, while Michelle Canto rounded out the podium in 1:38:47.
Schwazer’s return to competition has been closely watched by the Italian athletics community. Prior to the championships, he had participated in the Trentino-Alto Adige Regional Open Championships in 2023, completing the 10,000-meter race walk in 38:24.07, a personal best after 14 years. This performance fueled optimism for his performance in Alessandria.
The introduction of the half marathon distance in race walking reflects a broader shift within World Athletics, which has eliminated the 50km race walk – the event in which Schwazer won Olympic gold at the 2008 Beijing Games – and introduced the marathon race walk over 42.195 km. This change underscores the evolving landscape of the sport and the challenges faced by athletes adapting to new distances and regulations.
While Schwazer’s return to the Italian championships didn’t unfold as hoped, he expressed his continued passion for the sport. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Schwazer stated, “Someone stopped me years ago, but it didn’t accept away my desire to race walk. I hope my children…” (the quote is incomplete in the source).
The Italian National Race Walking Championships provided a glimpse into the future of Italian race walking, with emerging talents like Orsoni and Fiorini showcasing their potential on the national stage. The event also highlighted the complexities of the sport, particularly the strict enforcement of technical rules and the challenges faced by athletes returning from suspensions.
What’s Next: The focus now shifts to the World Team Championships in Brasilia on April 12 and the European Championships in Birmingham from August 10-16, where Orsoni and Fiorini will look to build on their national titles and represent Italy on the international stage. Schwazer’s future racing plans remain uncertain.
