INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Carlos Alcaraz continued his dominant run in 2026, overcoming a stern test from Arthur Rinderknech 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-2 on Monday at the BNP Paribas Open. The victory secured Alcaraz’s place in the round of 16, where he will face Casper Ruud.
The world No. 1, and a two-time champion in Indian Wells, needed two hours and 18 minutes to dispatch the Frenchman. Rinderknech, seeded 28th, pushed Alcaraz to the limit, particularly in a tightly contested first set. This marked the sixth career meeting between the two players, with Alcaraz improving to 6-0 overall against Rinderknech. However, the Frenchman has consistently proven a challenging opponent, utilizing a powerful serve and aggressive net play.
The opening set was a back-and-forth affair, with both players holding serve comfortably for much of the set. Rinderknech made a statement early, opening with two aces in his first service game. Alcaraz faced just three break points throughout the set, saving them all, even as Rinderknech managed to fend off the two break opportunities he faced. With the set tied at 6-6, a tiebreak ensued. Rinderknech gained an early advantage in the tiebreak, leading 5-2 with two mini-breaks. Alcaraz mounted a spirited comeback, reeling off four consecutive points to level the score at 5-6, but Rinderknech ultimately closed out the set.
Shift in Momentum
The second set saw a shift in momentum as both players experienced a dip in their serving consistency. Rinderknech secured an early break in the first game, but Alcaraz immediately responded with a break of his own to level the score. This exchange seemed to ignite a fire within the Spaniard. Alcaraz secured a second break in the third game, taking a 4-2 lead and ultimately forcing a decisive third set.
Alcaraz continued his strong form into the third set, breaking Rinderknech’s serve in the opening game. He followed that up with a hold to love, extending his lead to 2-0. The top seed found his rhythm, dictating play and capitalizing on opportunities. Another break for a 4-1 advantage effectively sealed the match, bringing Alcaraz to a remarkable 14-0 record for the 2026 season.
According to Infosys ATP Stats, Alcaraz converted four of ten break chances across the second and third sets, overwhelming his opponent once he found his groove on Stadium Court. Even a minor ankle concern early in the second set couldn’t derail the Spaniard’s progress.
“For me, it was really, really difficult,” Alcaraz said after the match. “He was playing his best tennis, I would say, in the first, the beginning of the second. I got in trouble, to be honest, but just really happy with the way that I dealt with everything that was happening. I accepted it, kept going, stayed strong mentally and then tried to do a little bit different… I feel I just started to play more solid, waiting for my chances.”
Alcaraz’s ability to win crucial points on his second serve proved pivotal, converting 52% compared to Rinderknech’s 39%. He also committed significantly fewer unforced errors, 18 to Rinderknech’s 26.
In the round of 16, Alcaraz will face Casper Ruud, who defeated Valentin Vacherot 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Monday. Alcaraz holds a 5-1 head-to-head advantage over Ruud, including victories in the 2022 US Open and Miami Masters 1000 finals.
The match against Ruud promises to be another challenging encounter for Alcaraz as he continues his pursuit of further titles in 2026. The BNP Paribas Open, held annually in Indian Wells, California, is a prestigious Masters 1000 tournament that attracts the world’s top tennis players. The desert conditions and swift courts often lead to exciting, high-quality matches.
Alcaraz’s continued success at Indian Wells underscores his status as one of the leading figures in men’s tennis. His ability to overcome adversity and maintain a high level of play throughout the season is a testament to his talent and dedication.
