Adaba Basketball Tournament: 600+ Players to Compete in El Toyo This Easter 2024

EL TOYO, ALMERÍA, Spain – The coastal town of El Toyo is preparing to welcome over 600 young basketball players from across Spain for the fifteenth edition of the Torneo Adaba de Semana Santa, a competition showcasing the talent within the Spanish basketball pipeline. The tournament, scheduled to run from March 29th to April 1st, will be held at the municipal pavilion in El Toyo.

The event was presented this morning by Antonio Casimiro, the Almería City Council’s representative for Active Citizenship, Mobility, and Sports, alongside Club Adaba President Belén García Muriana, tournament creator Luis Parejo, and coordinator Juan Ramón Aguilera. Casimiro highlighted the tournament’s significance, stating it embodies the city’s vision of being active, healthy, and leveraging sports as a driver for both social and economic growth.

This year’s tournament sees a renewed emphasis on local participation, with El Toyo Basket, CB Roquetas, and Club Adaba all fielding teams. This move, according to organizers, aims to recapture the tournament’s original spirit and foster a stronger connection with the local basketball community.

The Torneo Adaba de Semana Santa will feature both male and female competitors, ranging in age from 8 to 15, participating in categories from minibasket to cadete. Beyond the competition itself, the event is designed to promote camaraderie and shared experiences among the young athletes.

“This edition represents a return to our roots,” explained tournament coordinator Juan Ramón Aguilera. “We’re aiming for an event that is more intimate, more family-friendly, and focused on ensuring everyone – especially the children and their families – thoroughly enjoys the experience.” Aguilera also noted that this anniversary edition will feature enhanced activities, prizes, and a generally more festive atmosphere.

Casimiro underscored the economic benefits of sports tourism, noting that it surpassed 8 billion euros in Spain in 2024 and continues to be a rapidly growing sector. He also praised El Toyo as an ideal location for such events, citing its robust sports infrastructure, hotel accommodations, gorgeous seaside location, and favorable climate.

The Almería City Council representative also emphasized the educational value of the tournament, stating, “Sport is a fundamental tool for instilling values such as respect, coexistence, teamwork, and fair play. That is the true victory we should strive for as a society.”

The tournament’s organizers have expressed gratitude for the support of the Diputación (provincial council) and the event’s sponsors. The XV Torneo Adaba de Semana Santa promises to be a showcase of young basketball talent, fostering both athletic competition and positive social values within the community.

Players will be traveling from Madrid, Seville, Granada, Málaga, and Almería to participate in the four-day event. The competition aims to provide a platform for emerging talent within the Spanish basketball system.

The event is expected to draw significant attention to El Toyo, further solidifying its reputation as a destination for sports tourism. The combination of competitive basketball, a welcoming atmosphere, and a beautiful location makes the Torneo Adaba de Semana Santa a highlight on the Spanish youth basketball calendar.

What’s Next: The XV Torneo Adaba de Semana Santa begins on March 29th at the municipal pavilion in El Toyo. Further updates and results will be available through the Almería City Council website and Club Adaba’s official channels.
