Aaron-Khai Xing Gaze to Reset After Swiss Open Quarterfinal Loss
BASEL, Switzerland – The Malaysian men’s doubles pair of Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing will aim to quickly rebound from a quarterfinal defeat at the YONEX Swiss Open, as they prepare for the Orleans Masters next week. The world No. 27 duo lost to Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard 19-21, 15-21 on Friday at St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland, missing out on a potential semifinal berth.
The loss, whereas disappointing, comes after a strong showing at the Swiss Open where Aaron-Khai Xing upset two Indonesian pairs, demonstrating their potential on the international stage. They first defeated Rian Ardianto and Rahmat Hidayat, followed by a victory over Leo Rolly Carnando and Bagas Maulana. These wins highlighted their growing confidence and ability to compete against higher-ranked opponents.
Missed Opportunities in Basel
According to men’s doubles coach Chang Kim Wai, the quarterfinal match didn’t see Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing play to their usual standard. Kim Wai noted that the pair allowed their Danish opponents to gain momentum too easily, ultimately impacting their performance. “Today (Friday) their movement was quite slow, especially Aaron. He looked too cautious and their attacking play was not effective. From there it became difficult for them to win points,” Kim Wai said.
A critical turning point in the second game occurred when the score was tied at 14-14. Lundgaard and Vestergaard then capitalized, reeling off five consecutive points to secure match point and close out the victory. Kim Wai pointed to a loss of rhythm and a dip in shot quality as key factors in the shift in momentum. “The problem was that they could not maintain up with the rhythm of the match. The quality of their shots also dropped and there was less pressure on the opponents. When the opponents do not feel any pressure, their confidence keeps growing,” he explained.
Orleans Masters: A Chance to Rebound
Despite the setback, Kim Wai is optimistic that Aaron-Khai Xing can address the issues identified in Basel before the Orleans Masters, which begins next Tuesday. The Malaysian pair will be seeded seventh in the tournament and will face Russia’s Rodion Alimov and Maksim Ogloblin in the opening round. This tournament presents a valuable opportunity for Aaron-Khai Xing to demonstrate their resilience and build upon the positive momentum they established earlier in the Swiss Open.
The Orleans Masters will also be significant for the Malaysian team as Aaron-Khai Xing will be their sole representatives in the men’s doubles competition. This adds extra pressure, but also provides a focused environment for the pair to concentrate on their performance and refine their strategies.
Looking Ahead for the Young Duo
The defeat at the Swiss Open denied Aaron-Khai Xing the chance to reach their first semifinal of the year, but their overall performance suggests they are steadily progressing. Their ability to overcome established Indonesian pairs demonstrates their potential to challenge the top teams in the world. The coaching staff will likely emphasize maintaining a consistent rhythm, improving attacking play, and applying pressure to opponents in the upcoming Orleans Masters.
Badminton fans will be watching closely to see how Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing respond to this challenge. Their performance in Orleans will be a key indicator of their development and their ability to compete at the highest levels of the sport. The pair’s journey is a testament to the growing talent within Malaysian badminton, and their continued progress will be crucial for the nation’s success in future international tournaments.
The Orleans Masters promises to be a competitive event, and Aaron-Khai Xing will demand to be at their best to navigate the challenges ahead. Their opening-round match against Alimov and Ogloblin will be a crucial test of their ability to implement the lessons learned from their Swiss Open experience.
