The 2026 South Korean high school basketball season officially begins this week with the opening of the 63rd Chunkyu National Men’s and Women’s High School Basketball League, the ‘Haenam Tournament,’ on March 14th. A total of 81 teams – 11 more than participated last year – will compete for national supremacy over 10 days of action at the Haenam Ueul Gymnasium, Ueul Dongbaek Gymnasium, and Gugyo Gymnasium.
The Korea High School Basketball Federation (KHSBF) completed the tournament draw on March 6th. The competition will run from March 14th to March 24th, culminating in the high school championship games on the final day.
This year’s Chunkyu League features 30 men’s high school teams, 11 women’s high school teams, 29 men’s middle school teams, and 11 women’s middle school teams. The increased participation marks a significant expansion from the 70 teams that competed in 2025.
Defending champions Yongsan High School (men’s), Supia High School (women’s), Yongsan Middle School (men’s), and Onyang Middle School (women’s) will all return as favorites in their respective divisions, aiming to repeat their success and solidify their positions as the nation’s top programs.
In the men’s high school bracket, Yongsan High School, the defending champions, has been placed in Group A alongside Kwangju High School, Songdo High School, and Dong-A High School. Yongsan High School secured the title last year thanks to a stellar performance from SK-affiliated player Eddie Daniel, who was named tournament MVP.
On the women’s side, Supia High School, last year’s champions, finds itself in Group C with Sangju High School and Onyang High School. Supia High School enjoyed a dominant 2025 season, claiming the Chunkyu League title as part of a four-crown sweep. Group C is particularly intriguing, as it sets up a rematch of last year’s championship game between Supia High School and Onyang High School. Group A will likewise feature a key rivalry matchup between Sunil Women’s High School and Sookmyung Women’s High School.
Yongsan Middle School, the defending champions in the men’s middle school division, will compete in Group C against Munhwa Middle School, Sangju Middle School, and Songdo Middle School. Onyang Middle School, the reigning women’s middle school champions, is drawn into Group A with Supia Middle School, Sunil Middle School, and Dongju Middle School.
The 63rd Chunkyu League is hosted by the Korea High School Basketball Federation and sponsored by Haenam County and the Haenam County Sports Council. All tournament games will be live-streamed on the KHSBF’s official YouTube channel, ‘KSSBF TV.’
