Bielefeld, Germany – The 60th German Badminton Championships concluded on February 5, 2012, at the Seidensticker Halle in Bielefeld, with Michael Fuchs and Olga Konon emerging as key victors. The tournament saw Fuchs secure his third national title in the mixed doubles event, whereas Konon claimed the women’s singles crown following the withdrawal of defending champion Juliane Schenk due to illness.
The championships, notable for being the first German tournament to offer a live score service similar to international competitions, featured strong performances across various disciplines. Marc Zwiebler entered the tournament as the defending men’s singles champion, while Ingo Kindervater and Johannes Schöttler aimed to retain their men’s doubles title. In the women’s doubles, Sandra Marinello and Birgit Michels were the titleholders and Fuchs and Michels were the reigning champions in mixed doubles.
The absence of Juliane Schenk, ranked eighth in the world at the time, significantly altered the landscape of the women’s singles competition. Her withdrawal paved the way for Olga Konon to seize the opportunity and claim her first national title in the event. Adding to the pre-tournament drama, Carola Bott also opted out of competing, citing disagreements with the German Badminton Federation.
Michael Fuchs demonstrated his dominance in the mixed doubles, partnering with Birgit Michels to deliver a commanding performance throughout the tournament. They received a bye in the first round and then dispatched Zanssen/Pils (21:9/21:9) and S. Schöttler/Köhler of VfL Hamburg (21:5/21:6) with relative ease. Their path to the final continued with victories over Huckriede/Voigt (21:7/21:11) in the quarterfinals and Käsbauer/Goliszewski (21:15/21:15) in the semifinals.
The final saw Fuchs and Michels face their consistent rivals, Johannes Schöttler and Sandra Marinello, who were also the reigning champions in their respective doubles categories. Fuchs and Michels started strongly, winning the first set 21-9. While Schöttler and Marinello mounted a stronger challenge in the second set, Fuchs and Michels ultimately prevailed 21-19, securing their second consecutive mixed doubles title. This victory, however, did not contribute to their Olympic qualification goals, as points for the Olympics were earned through participation in major international tournaments.
In the men’s singles, Marc Zwiebler successfully defended his title, showcasing his skill and consistency throughout the competition. The tournament also saw Dieter Domke finish as the runner-up, and Lukas Schmidt and Marcel Reuter secure bronze medals.
The women’s doubles title was claimed by Birgit Michels and Sandra Marinello, while the men’s doubles crown went to Ingo Kindervater and Johannes Schöttler. The full medal table is as follows:
- Herreneinzel (Men’s Singles): Marc Zwiebler
- Dameneinzel (Women’s Singles): Olga Konon
- Herrendoppel (Men’s Doubles): Ingo Kindervater & Johannes Schöttler
