Ulsan, South Korea – The Republic of Korea’s National Tennis Team (Sangmu) recently completed a community outreach program in Ulsan, offering free tennis instruction to local enthusiasts and aspiring young players. The initiative, held on March 13th at the Ulsan Jung-gu Tennis Court, saw ten members of the team, including national representatives, share their expertise and passion for the sport.
Led by head coach Jeong Seong-yoon, the team hosted a two-hour clinic for over 100 local tennis players. Participants received instruction on fundamental techniques, including forehands, backhands, volleys, and serves. The event wasn’t solely focused on adult players; thirteen young athletes from local elementary and middle schools also benefited from specialized coaching from the national team members.
Among the players participating in the event were Kwon Soon-woo and Hong Seong-chan, both current national team members. They were joined by Jeong Yun-seong, Shin Woo-bin, Park Yong-jun, Chu Seok-hyeon, Jang Yun-seok, Park Seung-min, Lee Jun-hyeon, and Hyeon Jun-ha, creating a wealth of experience for attendees to learn from. The team capped off the day with a fan signing session, providing a memorable experience for those in attendance.
The initiative was praised by Kim Young-won, president of the Ulsan Jung-gu Tennis Association, who stated that having prominent national players engage with the local community will significantly contribute to the growth and revitalization of tennis at the grassroots level. “We expect this event to play a big role in expanding and revitalizing recreational sports,” Kim said, according to the Ulsan Jung-gu Tennis Association.
This type of outreach is becoming increasingly common as professional sports teams recognize the importance of community engagement. For the Sangmu tennis team, it’s a chance to give back to the fans who support them and to inspire the next generation of Korean tennis players. The event highlights the growing popularity of tennis in South Korea and the commitment of its national athletes to fostering a thriving tennis community.
