The Swiss ski racer Franjo von Allmen won the first gold medal Winter Olympics won in Italy. The 24-year-old world champion won the descent on the difficult Stelvio slope in Bormio with a lead of 0.2 seconds over the Italian Giovanni Franzoni. Dominik Paris, who won his first Olympic medal at the age of 36, took bronze. Simon Jocher was the only German athlete not to make it into the top 20, 2.40 seconds behind the winner.
Von Allmen won the world championship title in Saalbach last year. It was his first Olympic start. He is the second Swiss downhill winner in a row. Four years ago in Beijing, Beat Feuz won gold.
