Walid Regragui: Morocco Federation Denies Resignation

Is this the end of the adventure for Walid Regragui? Four months before the start of the 2026 World Cup (June 11 – July 19), the coach of the Moroccan national team has reportedly put his resignation on the table, according to information from Foot Mercato and RMC Sport.

Tired of the pressure and exhausted by the last African Cup of Nations, which ended in cruel disappointment for the Atlas Lions, beaten in the final by Senegal (1-0 after), the 50-year-old technician would have expressed his desire to leave to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (RFMF). In a press release, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) however “categorically denied the information relayed on certain news sites announcing that Walid Regragui had submitted his resignation”.

Highly criticized in Morocco before and during the competition

This vagueness about the future of the coach comes three weeks after the painful final Morocco lost after an incredible match. Very close to bringing his country its first CAN since 1976, the coach had witnessed from the sidelines the disintegration of his players, stunned by Brahim Diaz’s missed panenka at the end of added time then by Pape Gueye’s saving goal in overtime.

Highly criticized in Morocco before and during the competition, Regragui, whose credit earned by the historic semi-final reached at the 2022 World Cup quickly faded, would have left the continental tournament exhausted, aware of having missed an exceptional chance to be crowned at home. As a reminder, before the Moroccan selection, Regragui had already coached FUS Rabat (Morocco), Al-Duhail (Qatar) and Wydad AC (Morocco).
