Luka Vušković has been the exceptional player of the season at Hamburger SV so far. The defender impresses with his excellent defensive work and is also extremely dangerous to score. He scored his third goal of the season against FC Bayern (2-2) and was always dangerous in standard situations. But one scene in particular away from the ball really caused Lothar Matthäus to freak out on the Sky microphone.
What had happened? Shortly before half-time, the Munich team had won the ball on the left against the advanced HSV. The ball came to Serge Gnabry via Michael Olise and Harry Kane, who scored the supposed 2-1 from a few meters. But referee Harm Osmers ruled it offside. Because when Michael Olise passed to Kane, Vušković was the last Hamburg defender to take a step forward at exactly the right moment, which meant that Kane was clearly offside.
Already during the live commentary on Sky, Lothar Matthäus raved: “Great! That’s quality. At 18 years old, he plays as if he had already played in three World Cups,” the record national player was euphoric. After the game, Matthäus continued to rave about the Croatian because of this situation. “I didn’t see at the age of 30 what he sees at the age of 18. This player is so intelligent,” praised Matthäus.
The Sky expert’s praise was almost a bit unpleasant for the young star himself. “That means a lot to me. I don’t even know what to say.”
Vušković not only let Kane run offside, but also defended him almost the entire way down the pitch. In the end, he ran 10.8 kilometers, completed 81 percent of his passes and won 67 percent of his duels.
