Van Gerwen: Premier League Darts First Round Win

Darter Michael van Gerwen is the winner of the first round of the Premier League. In Newcastle, the Vlijmen native was too strong for Gian van Veen from Andelse in the final 4-6.

Van Gerwen started the evening strongly by beating Stephen Bunting 6-2. World number two Luke Humphries was defeated by the same score in the semi-finals.

Gian van Veen cleverly defeated Luke Littler in the quarter-finals. He recently lost the World Cup final to the Englishman. Then it was The Giant too strong for Johnny Clayton.

In the Brabant final in Newcastle, the Vlijmen native started the match stronger. The green wrecking ball took the first leg from the darts player from Andel and immediately made it 0-2.

Van Gerwen not impressed
Van Veen then managed to get something back and came back to 3-4 in legs. All matches in the Premier League, the competition with the best darts players, are up to six. Van Gerwen, however, did not seem impressed and made it 3-5.

Missed in the next leg Mighty Mike a match dart and 23-year-old Van Veen did something in return. Van Gerwen did nothing about that either and with an average of 97.81 and six maximum scores he won the final 4-6.

Thanks to this victory, Van Gerwen is the leader of the Premier League for at least a week. On Wednesday he opened a book about the few difficult weeks he has had. He managed to throw that off in time.

Van Veen made his debut in the competition and is now immediately second. The darts players will arrive in Antwerp next Thursday.
