Rome, 31 Jan. (Adnkronos) – The goal is common. Build a political project that broadens the offer to the ‘centre’ of the progressive coalition, that speaks to the disappointed, to those who do not recognize themselves in the Democratic Party or the 5 Star Movement, to those who no longer vote. But whether they get there together is still a gamble. Today in EUR, the former Grillino minister Vincenzo Spadafora, at the convention of his Primavera association, brought together the various realities that make up the current variegated ‘centrist’ galaxy. Italia Viva, Progetto Civico Italia by Alessandro Onorato, Più Uno promoted by Ernesto Maria Ruffini and the mayors of Genoa and Milan, Silvia Salis and Beppe Sala. “We need a constituent to build the ‘fourth leg’ of the centre-left”, Spadafora’s push.
There are those who talk about a Margherita 2.0, a container that brings together different experiences in the wake of Francesco Rutelli’s season. The ‘ingredients’ would be the ulivist and Catholic-democrat Ruffini, the civility of Onorato, the reformism of Iv. And there is Mayor Salis with her potential as a front woman. But the road still seems long. Who is there, how and who should lead the new entity. Sala summed it up as he closed the morning’s proceedings at EUR: “Let’s not get carried away by haste. The politics are a year and a half away. Time is needed to develop a wise and concrete thought. Today was a good transition.”
The owner of the house, Spadafora argues: “Today no contract is signed but to beat Meloni’s right we need to get together”. And he calls Elly Schlein into question because it is up to the Democratic Party “to convene a table. Once the referendum is closed, let’s work on this. Today we have brought together here all those who have created new realities this year. There are differences but there are many more things that unite us”. A concept that returns in the morning’s speeches. Salis says from the stage: “Where we choose to be together, to unite the progressive camp, I feel at home. Those who want to defend identity elements instead take a downward path towards irrelevance. We have a great opportunity before us: united we can win and I’m not just saying the elections, but the challenges of our country. We know how to administer, we lead all the big cities. We don’t mind journalists, magistrates, we don’t mind the Constitution. Our model is opposite to that of the right”.
For Iv Maria Elena Boschi participates in the Spring convention. “Zero vetoes” is now the slogan of Matteo Renzi who has already fielded Casa Riformista in the latest regional elections. “We have elected councilors in Campania, in Tuscany, in Calabria”, recalls Boschi. “The Olympics are starting and I know it’s wonderful to participate, but we want to win in 2027. I would like to arrive in February 2027 with a competitive team to win the elections and send Giorgia Meloni’s right home. And we have the chance to do it. The polls say it, the results of the latest regional ones say it and Giorgia Meloni knows it, who not by chance wants to change the electoral law, because with the current one the center-left can beat her”.
Taxes and security, the two issues on which there is the most debate this morning. “Meloni will lose the elections there,” says Boschi. Mayors Salis and Sala make no concessions on the point. ”We live in a time of fear and we need to reassure people. When Minister Piantedosi acts like a phenomenon and says ‘Sala has now noticed the security’. I reply to him that I campaigned in my second term on increasing the local police force and I did it as mayor. What did they do? Let’s push them on this”, underlines Sala.
Safety is also one of the issues on which Progetto Civico di Onorato is most active. The Capitoline councilor focuses more than on political formulas, on the proposals and on who must represent them: a new ruling class is needed, he urges. “No one goes back to a doctor who treated you badly, and therefore there is also a ruling class issue. Those who have already had roles of a certain type must demonstrate a certain generosity and step aside”. And leadership? For Onorato, primaries would be the best solution. Ruffini also talks about it and reproaches the Democratic Party for having “dropped the Olive flag”. The former director of the Revenue Agency observes: “Primaries have always been a distinctive element of the centre-left. Let’s trust our voters: they will certainly do better than us”. But this will have to be the last step before we need to “unite on a political project”.
