YEREVAN – Tigran Barseghjan, a dynamic winger who has been a cornerstone for the Armenian national football team, has announced his retirement from international play. Barseghjan’s departure marks the end of an era for Armenian football,as he steps away after a meaningful tenure representing his nation. His decision, while undoubtedly a blow to the team’s immediate future, comes with a heartfelt message of gratitude and continued support.
“Dear fans, I want to inform you that I have decided to end my career in the Armenian national team. His words echo the sentiment of many athletes who feel the weight of national pride and the deep connection with their supporters.
He continued, expressing his appreciation for everyone involved: “I would like to express my gratitude to all the coaches who trained me in the national team, my teammates, the team’s medical and administrative staff, everyone in the Armenian football Federation and of course our loyal fans who have always stood by us – in wins and losses.” This comprehensive thank you highlights the collaborative spirit of a national team, much like the camaraderie seen in American sports franchises from the NFL to the NBA.
Barseghjan concluded his statement with a promise of continued allegiance: “I will continue to support the national team, now in a new role as a fan. I wish our national team a lot of success and great performances.” This transition from player to fervent supporter is a common narrative in sports, reminiscent of legendary athletes who remain vocal advocates for their former teams.
Since making his national team debut in 2016, Barseghjan has amassed an impressive 64 caps and scored nine goals for Armenia. His presence on the field has been a constant source of energy and skill, frequently enough drawing comparisons to the impactful wingers seen in top European leagues.
His final appearance for the national team came on October 14th of last year, during a World Cup qualifier against Ireland in Dublin. In a moment that underscored the intense emotions of international competition, Barseghjan, who was captaining the side, received a red card in the 52nd minute after an altercation. The match ultimately ended in a 0-1 defeat for Armenia, a result that saw them finish at the bottom of their qualifying group and miss out on a World Cup berth.
While Barseghjan’s international playing career has concluded, his legacy as a dedicated representative of Armenian football is cemented. His decision to step down, though bittersweet, allows him to transition into a new phase of his life while remaining a passionate observer of his country’s sporting journey.
