BOLOGNA, Italy – The Termal Bologna Marathon is set to take place on March 1st, but a unique parallel event will unfold two days prior, on Saturday, February 28th, within the walls of the Dozza Prison. This unprecedented initiative, dubbed ‘Re-Start,’ will see 34 inmates participate in a marathon relay, offering a powerful symbol of rehabilitation and connection to the wider community.
The concept originated with Andrea De David, president of the Centro Sportivo Italiano of Bologna (CSI), and Bologna City Councilor Filippo Diaco, in collaboration with the Unione Sportiva Acli Bologna, the penitentiary administration, and the Dozza Prison’s director, Rosa Alba Casella. ‘Re-Start’ aims to provide inmates with an opportunity to engage with the city beyond the prison’s confines and to harness the power of sport as a tool for social reintegration.
The inmates will be organized into eight teams – six teams of four runners and two teams of five – to collectively cover the traditional marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers (approximately 26.2 miles). Each team will compete to complete their 5.1-kilometer leg in the fastest time. The event isn’t about individual speed, but collective effort and shared accomplishment.
“Bringing the marathon symbolically inside the correctional facility means offering detainees the opportunity to create a connection with what is happening in the city, beyond the prison walls,” explained Teresa Lopilato, president of the Bologna Marathon, in a statement. “We believe that sport can represent a concrete tool for inclusion, responsibility, and participation in social reintegration pathways.”
The initiative has garnered support from local officials, including Bologna’s sports assessor, Roberta Li Calzi, who will join Lopilato at the awards ceremony. The event is a testament to the belief that sport can transcend barriers and offer a pathway to positive change.
The Dozza Prison, officially known as the Casa Circondariale di Bologna, has a long history, and this event marks a novel approach to rehabilitation within its walls. The marathon isn’t simply a sporting event; it’s a symbolic gesture of hope and a commitment to providing opportunities for personal growth and reintegration for those serving time.
The broader Termal Bologna Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, March 1st, is expected to draw approximately 9,000 athletes, with roughly one-third coming from outside of Italy. The event will undoubtedly bring a significant boost to the local economy and showcase Bologna as a vibrant and welcoming city. However, the ‘Re-Start’ marathon within the Dozza Prison promises to be a particularly poignant and meaningful aspect of the weekend’s festivities.
De David emphasized the importance of collaboration in making this event a reality. “Thanks to the joint work of the penitentiary administration, Termal Bologna Marathon, Acli and CSI, we can offer an interesting opportunity to the guests of the structure, aimed at concretely pursuing the universal right to sport, as recently sanctioned by our Constitution,” he said. He expressed hope that this initiative will continue to grow, involving more organizations and participants in the future.
The ‘Re-Start’ marathon represents a small but significant step towards a more inclusive and rehabilitative approach to the justice system. By providing inmates with a chance to participate in a challenging and rewarding physical activity, organizers hope to foster a sense of purpose, responsibility, and connection to the outside world. It’s a reminder that even within the confines of a prison, the spirit of competition and the pursuit of personal goals can thrive.
The event is scheduled to initiate in the morning on February 28th, and the results will be announced shortly thereafter. The Termal Bologna Marathon will then proceed as planned on March 1st, with runners taking to the streets of Bologna to compete in the full marathon and other associated events.
Following the ‘Re-Start’ marathon, attention will turn to the main event on March 1st. Runners and spectators alike can find detailed information about the course, road closures, and event schedule on the official Termal Bologna Marathon website. The marathon promises to be a celebration of athleticism, community, and the enduring spirit of human endeavor.
