The NFL season has delivered one of the most uncertain and hard-fought Super Bowl races in recent years. After five months of competition and 285 games played, the great stage of American football is ready to light up. The Lombardi Trophy is there, waiting
A dominant and feisty attack clashes with a sharp and suffocating defense. The matchup between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks will test the best of the best on both ends of the field.
This season, the Patriots have tormented opponents with fascinating play designs and seemingly unstoppable execution. Meanwhile, the Seahawks frustrated offenses with a solid, flawless defense that made advancing the ball an impossible feat.
Both teams finished the regular season with an identical record of 14-3. Surprisingly, each of them achieved more success away from home than in their own stadiums. Seattle went 6-2 at Lumen Field, but went an impressive 8-1 on the road.
New England, on the other hand, suffered all three defeats at home and remained perfect on the road. It is undeniable that every team is comfortable playing in a foreign environment.
The Super Bowl game takes place at Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers. The Seahawks will have a chance to redeem themselves and close the circle. Seattle started the season right with a loss to the 49ers on their home field.
That’s how it started. Now the Seahawks can have their “how it ends” moment. The question is simple, but of great importance: Can Seattle’s formidable defense overcome New England’s relentless offense?
Scary Seattle
Seattle achieved a rare defensive trifecta this season. By almost every major metric, the Seahawks fielded the best defense in the league. They allowed just 292 total points in the regular season, the fewest points in the NFL, while averaging just 17.2 points per game.
Additionally, they led the league in estimated points added (EPA) allowed. EPA is an advanced statistic that evaluates each individual play, measuring how much it increases or decreases a team’s expected points. Leading the NFL in defensive EPA means consistently making high-level defensive plays, snap after snap.
The last stat line Seattle gets this year is defense-adjusted value over average (DVOA). Another tricky category that fans don’t have to worry about, but one that demonstrates the Seahawks’ defensive dominance. DVOA measures a team’s effectiveness on each play compared to league average, adjusted for situation and opponent.
Once again, Seattle took first place alone. Additionally, he allowed the second-fewest rushing yards in the league. The NFC champions have an elite defense, no doubt about it.
The Seahawks defense didn’t just produce results, they also produced highlights. Big shots, tight coverages and timely stops have become weekly staples.
Now, there’s a problem. Seattle’s schedule didn’t feature any teams that excelled offensively. In total offensive rating, the Titans are second to last in the league. New Orleans averaged 18 points per game, one of only six teams to average fewer than 20 points this season.
Several opponents ranked near the bottom of the league in scoring, including Pittsburgh and Carolina. Others – Tampa Bay, Arizona, Houston, Washington and Atlanta – ranked near the bottom of the offensive rankings.
Seattle has faced the league’s best offense, the Los Angeles Rams, three times. In those games, the Rams scored 37, 27 and 19 points, numbers that exceeded Seattle’s season average in points allowed. However, it would be foolish to think that the Seahawks can only dominate weak offenses.
They held a well-balanced Jaguars offense to just 12 points and completely stifled San Francisco, a team averaging 25.7 points per game, holding the 49ers to 13, 3 and 6 points in three games.
An indecipherable challenge
Despite the excellent defensive year, Seattle will have to face its most difficult challenge. The Patriots boast one of the most electric and dynamic offenses in football, led by MVP candidate Drake Maye.
New England is third in total scoring, second in points per game and second in rushing yards. Additionally, he ranks first in completion percentage, with an astonishing 71.9%.
Maye has done a tremendous job throwing the football, but it’s also his top-tier speed that leaves opponents stunned. No quarterback has made more scrambles this year than Maye. And the rising superstar point guard believes the Patriots haven’t reached their peak yet.
“I think we haven’t played our best football yet in these playoffs, and I’m looking forward to seeing that and hopefully having that click in the Super Bowl“Maye said.”That would be cool“.
Maye played fearlessly. He doesn’t shy away from moments of pressure and doesn’t hesitate to take matters into his own hands. Thanks to its high-level processing capabilities, it is capable of making big decisions that lead to unpredictable outcomes. Overcome defensive strategies.
Does the legendary franchise have one of the best offenses of the season? Certain. But just like the Seahawks, the Patriots have benefited from a favorable schedule.
The Patriots faced just two playoff teams during the regular season – the Bills and Steelers – and many of their opponents ranked near the bottom of the defensive rankings. Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and the Jets ranked among the bottom ten defenses in the league.
However, New England has proven that it can succeed against elite competition. In the Divisional Round, the Patriots faced Houston, a defense that posted surprisingly similar numbers to Seattle. Although Houston’s defense is the best in the league in terms of passing and the second lowest in terms of points conceded per game, New England has found a solution.
Who will raise the Vince Lombardi?
On Sunday, each team’s strengths will be put to the test. Can Drake Maye break through the suffocating defensive line? Or will defense win the championship once again? The world has already seen a glimpse of this scenario.
The two teams met in the 2015 Super Bowl. Seattle came to the game with the best defense in the league, while New England was led by Tom Brady. Two elite opposites trying to outdo each other.
With one minute left in the season, Seattle was down four points. But he drove to the Patriots’ five-yard line and had four chances to reclaim the lead and win the game.
On the next play, Marshawn Lynch, arguably one of the best running backs in the NFL, gains four yards. The Seahawks were one yard away from the title. From celebrating covered in confetti. From beating the dynastic Patriots.
Instead, everyone witnessed a twist that no one had foreseen. The obvious and expected call was a run, but the Seahawks decided to pass the ball. They thought they were thinking outside the box and doing something the defense wouldn’t expect.
But Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler was thinking outside the box, too. On the fourth and final goal with 29 seconds left, Butler intercepted Russell Wilson’s pass destined for the end zone. The interception sealed New England’s victory, while the read went down in NFL history as one of the greatest plays.
“I didn’t feel anything because it all happened so fast, but I’ve never seen a group of grown men cry like that after I caught that ball.” Butler said. “Yesthey huddled over me, crying and saying, ‘Oh, I can’t believe you did that‘”.
11 years ago, it was the Patriots’ defense that unexpectedly delivered the championship. In 2026, each team’s strengths remain the same. But this time the Seahawks will work for a different outcome. Seattle seeks redemption. New England seeks repeat. The two opposites collide.
