Ski Jumping & Performance Enhancement: A Controversy

THE SPORT SCAN – Anti-doping officials at the Milan-Cortina Games, which open this Friday, announced Thursday the opening of an investigation into cheating into a performance-enhancing procedure due to thickening of the crotch

An astonishing and… cheeky possible cheating. Anti-doping officials at the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games announced Thursday that they had opened an investigation into potential cheating by certain ski jumpers. According to the German media Bildpenis enlargement is a method used by certain athletes to improve their performance.

According to the German daily, this practice consists of injecting hyaluronic acid to thicken the crotch and thus modify the amplitude of the suit. This would allow the acrobats to stay in the air longer, and therefore land further away.

An investigation opened by WADA

This process will be studied by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), as was announced Thursday during a press conference. “I don’t know the details of ski jumping – or how it can improve performance – but if anything comes to light we will look into any information to see if it is indeed linked to doping.”declared WADA director Olivier Niggli.

This practice can be effective. Kamran Karim, a German doctor at the Maria-Hilf hospital in Krefeld, near Düsseldorf, declared in January, for Bildthat it was possible to create a “temporary and visible thickening of the penis thanks to injections of paraffin or hyaluronic acid”. A process which would therefore indeed allow jumpers to gain potential millimeters or centimeters, which can make the difference during a competition.

Despite everything, this practice involves “risks”. The combination of jumpers is strictly regulated and any modification may result in sanctions. Last January, two Norwegian jumpers, Marius Lindvik – Olympic champion in the large hill in 2022 in Beijing and who is defending his title this year – and Johann Andre Forfang were disqualified after an inspection of their outfit, deemed non-regulatory. The investigation ultimately established that the two athletes were not responsible, while three members of the Norwegian team’s management were suspended.

The Milan-Cortina Olympic Games open this Friday with the opening ceremony, scheduled from 8 p.m. The ski jumping events will begin on Saturday, with the small hill jump for women. The men will begin their competition on Monday February 9, also with the small hill. And, hopefully, regulation outfits.
