This Thursday, Moroccan justice sentenced 18 Senegalese supporters and one Franco-Algerian to prison terms ranging from three months to one year. All had been detained in Morocco since the incidents that occurred during the final of the African Cup of Nations (CAN), played in mid-January.
In detail, nine were sentenced to one year in prison with a fine of 5,000 dirhams, six others to six months in prison and a 2,000 dirham fine, while the last four (3 Senegalese and 1 Franco-Algerian) received three months in prison and a 1,000 dirham fine.
The facts held against them relate to “hooliganism”, a qualification which includes violence, in particular against the police, damage to sports equipment, throwing projectiles as well as trespassing on the lawn.
Earlier in the day, the prosecution had requested sentences of up to two years’ imprisonment for each of the defendants. The court ultimately imposed sanctions lower than these requisitions.
