Today, February 3, Rector of Riga Stradins University (RSU), Professor Aigars Pētersons and Chancellor Toms Baumanis met with the basketball club VEF Riga president Gati Jahovič and chairman of the council Jānis Blum to agree on the continuation of long-term cooperation between RSU and the titled Latvian basketball club.
During the meeting, the parties agreed to extend the cooperation agreement for five years, thus strengthening the already successfully implemented partnership, including the operation of the RSU / VEF farm club. The cooperation plan envisages the targeted attraction of young basketball talents to the club, while providing them with the opportunity to obtain higher education at RSU and to develop both their sports and academic careers in a balanced manner.
Current RSU and VEF Riga cooperation has already given concrete results – the RSU / VEF farm club team successfully proved itself in the Užava Cup organized by the Latvian Basketball Association, reaching the semi-finals, and the players of the farm club have successfully started their studies in various RSU study programs, combining high sports performance with studies.
In the following years, the cooperation foresees a mutual transfer of athletes between the farm club and the basic club, as well as the attraction of sponsors and supporters. This will provide more opportunities for new players to gain game practice and professional development.
Both RSU and the basketball club VEF Riga the management emphasizes that this cooperation makes a significant contribution to young athletes, creating a solid foundation for their future both in sports and in their professional life. At the same time, the partnership strengthens the competitiveness of the RSU basketball team and opens up new opportunities for healthcare students to practice in the field of sports medicine, linking higher education, science and high-performance sports environment.
