Hans Kraay Jr. believes that PSV will also become national champions and win the KNVB Cup without Ricardo Pepi in the selection. In ESPN’s De Voetbalkantine, the former footballer thinks that the Eindhoven team would even have won the prizes if De Graafschap striker Bouke Boersma came to Eindhoven this winter.
It is particularly quiet in Eindhoven just before the transfer market closes. PSV seemed to want to lose Pepi to Fulham this winter for an amount of more than 30 million euros, but the Eindhoven team did not go along with that. According to technical director Earnest Stewart, PSV wants to keep the American on board to win both the national title and the KNVB cup this season.
According to Kraay Jr., a departure of the American striker would have made little difference to PSV’s season. “It’s not meant to be funny, but if you let Pepi go for 37 million and you take Bouke Boersma from De Graafschap, you will also become champion and win the cup.” Commentator Vincent Schildkamp agrees. “35 million for Pepi is already far above a market-based amount, so they could have done that. They are seventeen points clear in the league.”
Jong PSV striker Robin van Duiven did make a switch to Belgian Lommel SK on Deadline Day. According to Kees Kwakman, a good decision by the nineteen-year-old attacker. “He didn’t come in under any circumstances. All the strikers were injured and he didn’t come in yet. They just don’t think he’s good enough.”
