Pep Guardiola: Absence After Pro-Palestinian Speech Explained

Guardiola said in his ‘passionate’ speech: “When I saw a child in the last two years with these images on social media, on television, filming himself, begging, ‘Where is my mother?’ among the rubble and he still doesn’t know it… I always think: ‘What were they thinking?’ And I thought we had left them alone, abandoned. I always imagine them saying, ‘Where are you? Come help us’.

“And even now, we haven’t. Maybe because those in power are cowards, because they basically send innocent young people to kill innocent people. That’s what cowards do. Because they’re in their homes, with heating when it’s cold and air conditioning when it’s hot.

“We have to move forward. Just being present means so much — so, so much. What caused the bomb — and what they want to cause — is silence, and for us to look the other way. That’s their only goal: for us not to move forward. And this is what we have to fight. We have to not just look the other way; we have to engage and participate.”

“We stand before the world to show that, naturally, we are on the weaker side — which in this case is Palestine. But not Palestine alone; all causes. This is a statement for Palestine, and this is a statement for humanity.”
