Chance of number 1 status

Stefan Ortega is leaving Manchester City six months before the end of his contract and is changing clubs within England. The 33-year-old goalkeeper is joining Nottingham Forest. He also has a contract with the Tricky Trees until the end of the season, but has a better chance of playing time.

With the departure of the former Bielefeld player, Man City achieved a manageable transfer fee, which, thanks to bonuses, could amount to a total of 500,000 pounds – the equivalent of around 580,000 euros. The English reporter Ben Jacobs reports this after there was talk of a free transfer in the run-up to the transfer.

Since the Club World Cup in June, Ortega has not played between the posts for the Skyblues in a competitive game. In total there were 56 games under coach Pep Guardiola – 25 of them in the Premier League, where he won the championship title in 2023 and 2024. He was granted seven appearances in the Champions League, where the team also triumphed in 2023. Ortega takes a total of seven titles with him from his time at Man City.

In Nottingham, Matz Sels started the season as number one before being ousted by John Victor in December. The Brazilian had to undergo knee surgery shortly after the turn of the year and will be out for a long time. Ortega can therefore hope to quickly become a regular between the posts. “When it became clear that we had to take care of the goalkeeper position, Stefan immediately stood out. He will provide strong competition for our goalkeepers and help the team on and off the pitch,” said sports director Edú Gaspar.
