Näslund & Olympic Gold: A Guide

One of Sweden’s biggest hopes for gold makes Olympic entrance.

In addition, the biathlon men are chasing new medals – and the ladies in team Hasselborg are fighting for a place in the curling final.

+ Can Sandra Näslund handle the pressure?

The skicross star is the favorite to defend her gold from Beijing in 2022. After two injury-filled years, the Swede is back in earnest and has dominated the World Cup – which she leads. In the last competition before the Olympics, however, it was only a fourth place. Daniela Maier, Germany, challenges together with Fanny Smith, Switzerland, and the home jumper Jole Galli.

+ New golden chance for the biathletes

Martin Ponsiluoma took gold in the men’s pursuit start. In the relay, it was Swedish bronze. After a weak start, the biathletes have really picked up steam. In the final mass start over 15 kilometers – where Ponsiluoma took silver in Beijing four years ago – there is hope for new medals for both Ponsiluoma and Sebastian Samuelsson.

+ Team Hasselborg plays semi

After the men’s fiasco, the hope of new Swedish curling medals rests on the ladies in team Hasselborg. With seven wins and two losses, against Canada and South Korea, in the group stage, Sweden can be considered one of the favourites. In Beijing four years ago, it was bronze – in Italy they aim higher. Then a victory against world number one Canada in the semi-finals is required.

+ Can Finland shine in men’s hockey?

The men’s ice hockey tournament is in the semi-finals – without Tre Kronor. Reigning champion Finland settles with perennial favorite Canada for the one final spot. The USA and the swashbuckling Slovakia (Olympic bronze in Beijing) are fighting for the other.
