McCann Assault Charge: NHL Draft Pick Faces Charges

The maximum penalty for first degree aggravated assault in Pennsylvania is 20 years in prison and/or a $25,000 fine.

McKenna’s charges stem from an altercation that took place in State College on the evening of Jan. 31, according to the State College Police Department. Police said McKenna allegedly punched a 21-year-old man in the face, causing facial injuries that required surgery.

The hockey player was charged and released on $20,000 bail. The pretrial hearing of the case is scheduled for February 11.

The alleged incident happened on the same day as a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) outdoor hockey game. McKenna’s Pennsylvania State University Nittany Lions lost to the Michigan State University Spartans 4-5 in overtime.

McKenna had one goal and two assists in the game. This season, he has scored 32 points (11 goals, 21 assists) in 24 games for the Nittany Lions.

The NHL’s Central Scouting Agency ranks the Canadian U20 forward in first place among all North American hockey players. The NHL told ESPN it was aware of the allegations against McKenna, but would not comment further because he is not currently playing in the league.
