The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, through the Municipal Institute for the Promotion of Physical Activity and Sports (IMD), has launched the first municipal tracks for pickleball of the Canary Islands in the annex to the Carla Suárez tennis courts, within the López Socas Sports Complex.
The new area, which has involved an investment of 60,000 euros and has four tennis courts pickleball built on a specific surface called pickleball eco, which extends over more than 700 square meters, the council detailed this Friday in a statement.
The performance on the old fronton court responds to a request made by the Canarian Tennis Federation and the Gran Canaria Tennis Federation, as well as by athletes from the capital, given the “growing interest” in the pickleball.
He pickleball It is a sport of American origin that combines elements of tennis, badminton and paddle tennis and is practiced on a smaller court with paddles and a perforated ball, being a booming sport practice that in the Canary Islands already has seven clubs and around 200 federation licenses.
The mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias, has highlighted that this action “demonstrates that the City Council and the IMD continue to modernize and meet the demands of citizens” with the implementation of tracks for a “new” sport that is beginning to arouse “great interest.”
For her part, the Councilor for Sports, Carla Campoamor, has indicated that, after receiving the request, they did not hesitate to get to work to “respond to a growing demand” with the promotion of four courts “to promote the practice of a sport that little by little is adding more sports licenses.”
The president of the Canarian Tennis Federation, José Juan Sepúlveda, has highlighted that the launch of these courts will represent “a leap in quality” for the development of the pickleball in the Canary Islands, since it will allow more people “to learn about and practice this sport.”
The Department of Sports has reported that it has also allocated nearly 140,000 euros to various actions to modernize and adapt the Carla Suárez Courts, which, together with the four new courts, represents an investment of more than 200,000 euros.
