The media present Thursday morning in Orchard Park, for the press conference of new head coach of the Buffalo Bills Joe Brady, quickly noticed something wrong: quarterback Josh Allen was on crutches and he walked with a walking boot.
Allen revealed he had surgery for a broken bone in his foot on Monday. The operation involved the fifth metatarsal, which is usually followed by an 8-10 week recovery.
Allen admitted, however, that the operation would not have kept him off the field this week.
“I’m not going to lie,” Allen said. If we had a game this week, I would have played. »
Allen reportedly suffered the injury in a 23-20 Bills victory over the Cleveland Browns on December 21. He has played three full games since this injury.
After a victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round of the playoffs, Allen and the Bills were bounced by the Denver Broncos on January 17 in an overtime loss to the Denver Broncos.
Allen said he fully supports the promotion of offensive coordinator Joe Brady to head coach. The latter succeeds Sean McDermott, who was fired after nine seasons.
“What I saw was an owner and a family doing everything they could to bring the Lombardi Trophy back to Western New York. I saw a more motivated general manager than ever… I truly believe in the direction of this organization,” Allen said of Brady’s hiring process.
The one who is now head coach also spoke about this support from the quarterback.
“In full disclosure, I haven’t slept for the last week, it was the job I wanted. Josh told me he didn’t help me get this job, that I deserved it. It means so much to me…I was stressed throughout (the process). »
Allen just completed his eighth season in the NFL. He is nominated for MVP, having won the honor in 2024, and he was also named to the Pro Bowl.
Allen finished the season with 3,668 yards on 319 completions. He threw 25 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions. Allen added 579 rushing yards in addition to adding 14 rushing touchdowns.
