In January 2020, the former player was extradited to the United States after being required by a federal court and was sentenced to 12 years in prison, serving part of his sentence in a prison in Atlanta, Georgia.
However, he was released 6 years early for good behavior, which allowed him a considerable reduction in his sentence.
Journalist Jaime Orlando Dinas shared an image with Viáfara, confirming that he is now free and with his family.

At the time, the former player denied links to these crimes: “They linked me to people I never met. Fortunately, many people know who I am. I never felt support and they used me like a trophy to show myself as a result of the fight against drug trafficking,” he said.
At the time, the authorities revealed details of the capture of Viáfara, which took place in Jamundí, Valle del Cauca. The former Colombia national team player wore 50 million pesos in his pocket at the time of capture.
