The New York Jets hired former NFL and Stanford University head coach Frank Reich as offensive coordinator on Wednesday.
Reich will replace Tanner Engstrand, who agreed to leave the team last week after one season leading the Jets’ offense.
At 64, Reich brings experience as a quarterback and seasoned offensive presence to head coach Aaron Glenn. Last week, the team hired new defensive coordinator Brian Duker to replace Steve Wilks, who was fired with three weeks left in the season.
Reich met with Glenn and the Jets in person on Tuesday, after the team also met with Darrell Bevell and Greg Roman, finalists for the job. Last week, the team held video meetings with all three candidates, as well as Ronald Curry and Lunda Wells.
Reich went 4-8 as interim head coach at Stanford University last season and served as senior advisor to the Cardinals, who hired Tavita Pritchard as head coach in November. Reich previously served as a head coach in the NFL for the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers.
He played 14 years in the NFL as a quarterback, most notably during the 1996 season when Glenn was one of his teammates on the Jets.
