Hometown House: New Build & Family Roots

Ms. Lucie lived in Brno for many years, most of her life in a 3+kk apartment in a block of flats on a housing estate. At the end of the summer of 2024, however, she decided to move to her native Bzenc. “I always wanted to come back here, I have a strong emotional connection to this region. I grew up in a family home, so my dream of having my own house with a garden finally came true. The children are now grown up and have their own homes,” says Lucie.

Proven cooperation

Pavlína Štěpánková designed the block apartment for her, and since Lucie was extremely satisfied, she approached her again. The two-story family house has a floor area of 116 square metersthere are two bedrooms, a dressing room, a living room with a kitchen, two bathrooms and a separate toilet, an anteroom and a practical pantry.

“The building was completely new, they were ready plasters and electrical wiring, but floors, doors and bathrooms were missing. Ideally, I design the interior at the project stage, here I already had to work with what was there, for example to completely submit to the partitions and electrical installation,” recalls the interior designer.

New stairs and dream kitchen

For example, the stairs, which were originally metal and closed, were a problem. Lucie put up with them, even though she didn’t like them at all. “So when Pavlína showed me a design for airy, open stairs made of solid wood and assured me that she would arrange for the original ones to be dismantled and the joiner to make new ones, I was thrilled.”

The owner was also very pleased with the spacious kitchen unit with lots of storage space and a display case for display of onion porcelain after mom. In the original project, only a small “L”-shaped kitchen was drawn, which would not use the available space unnecessarily.

“I knew that Lucie likes to cook and needs enough work space. That’s why I enlarged the kitchen and added a showcase. Additional storage spaces for food were created from the back of it,” describes Pavlína Štěpánková.

Bathroom renovation

The originally proposed bathroom, which included a bathtub and a shower corner with a bathtub, was also modified. However, Lucie wished generous walk-in shower and she didn’t want a bathtub – she has one in the upstairs bathroom. The solution was a raised step, on which an open shower was created, and the connection to the bathtub was completely removed. Lucie already had a patchwork tile in her bathroom in Brno, which she fell in love with and wanted to transfer to her new house as a piece of her original home.

Favorite elements from the original apartment

The overall style of the interior follows on from the Brno apartment – the designer again used other popular elements, such as the dining table, chairs, coffee tables and small accessories. “I knew the client’s taste well. I know that she prefers light tones, natural wood decor and timeless solutions that have a cozy feel. That’s why she completely entrusted me with the choice of materials for furniture and upholstery as well as furnishing elements,” says Pavlína Štěpánková.

Timeless design

In the entire house, with the exception of the bathrooms, there is underfloor heating vinyl flooring in oak wood decor. The furniture is made of laminate, while the wood decor on it matches with interior door surfacewhich gives the entire space a uniform character.

The bright front surfaces on the kitchen counter and in the bathroom are made of lacquered MDF, and since Lucie wanted furniture with classic handles, they went for black metal ones. This detail also appears in other parts of the interior, such as door fittings, railings, coffee tables or planter bases, creating a subtle but distinctive design line.

“I admit that I was a little afraid of moving. After all, I spent many years in Brno and I liked it there. But as soon as I moved my things here, I felt at home from the first day. The interior radiates positive energy and I feel very good here,” concludes the satisfied owner.

Business card of the designer

For Pavlína Štěpánková, interior design is a lifelong passion, and her own interior studio is the fulfillment of her big dream. Her goal is that the interiors she creates for her clients are also their dream come true for an original, cozy and functional living or working environment. More at www.stepdesign.cz.
