Heat Pass on Ja Morant: Deadline Day Trade Details

By Mathieu Seguin | Sports editor

Ja Morant will ultimately stay in Memphis beyond the transfer deadline. Long announced as one of the big names likely to move, the leader did not find a buyer despite repeated efforts by the Grizzlies. Several teams have been mentioned as potential destinations, but no discussions have really taken shape. Among them, the Miami Heat seemed like a natural candidate.

After Jaren Jackson Jr.’s unexpected departure to Utah, many imagined Morant would be the next domino to fall. Yet nothing came to fruition. The All-Star leader is therefore preparing to finish the 2025-2026 season in Tennessee, at the heart of a team that has clearly entered a reconstruction phase. At only 26 years old, he now finds himself as the only remaining pillar of the old generation of the Grizzlies.

The market for Morant proved surprisingly cold. His immense talent is beyond doubt, but the questions surrounding his profile have visibly cooled the suitors. Rumors notably sent him to Miami, a franchise in search of a high-level leader for several months. However, despite initial interest, Florida management quickly distanced itself.

A profile too risky for Miami

According to information from the Miami Herald, the Heat would have made a phone call to Memphis to inquire about the situation. But very quickly, internal discussions led to a negative conclusion. “The Heat had enough interest in Ja Morant to make an initial call to the Grizzlies a few weeks ago. But not enough to try to get it back. Miami discussed his case internally, but decided not to pursue a trade due to numerous factors, including his contract and injury history.explained journalist Barry Jackson.

These reservations do not only concern the financial aspect. If Morant remains one of the most spectacular players in the league, his reliability raises questions. Since his NBA debut, he has never played more than 67 games in a full season. Between recurring injuries and suspensions, his availability has become a real problem for any organization considering building around him.

This season again, he only took part in 20 matches, before being sidelined by an elbow injury. A situation which adds to previous campaigns, where he had only played nine then fifty matches. For a team like Miami, already cautious in its salary management, investing massively in such an uncertain player represented too dangerous a bet.

Added to this is an imposing contract which would have complicated the Heat’s flexibility in the short and medium term. The Florida franchise has favored a measured strategy for several years, avoiding overly heavy commitments to risky profiles. In this context, even a talent as explosive as Morant was not enough to tip the scales.
