Goretzka Replacement: Matthäus Backs RB Leipzig Star

Leon Goretzka will leave FC Bayern Munich at the end of the season. TV expert Lothar Matthäus has apparently already identified a suitable replacement.

Xaver Schlager will leave RB Leipzig at the end of the season and will not extend his contract, which expires in the summer. The club officially announced this on Friday. According to TV expert Lothar Matthäus, a door at FC Bayern Munich could now open for the midfielder.

“Since Leon Goretzka is leaving Munich, Schlager could be a good fit. He is free, internationally experienced, he has known the Bundesliga for years. And in Leipzig he is not only responsible for the rough stuff, but also sets playful accents,” said Matthäus in the Bild.

Matthäus calls for “Laimer’s twin” at FC Bayern

In this scenario, Schlager could play alongside Konrad Laimer again at FC Bayern in the future, whom he already knows from their time together at RB Leipzig, RB Salzburg and the Austrian national team.

“Schlager is like Laimer’s twin on the pitch, just as snappy and strong in tackles,” said Matthäus and explained: “Laimer could concentrate on his role as a right-back at Bayern if Schlager came.”

Despite Goretzka’s impending departure, Schlager would have to assert himself in the FCB midfield against well-known competitors such as Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Tom Bischof. He could take a closer look at his possible rivals for a regular place next Wednesday.

In the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup (from 8:45 p.m. in LIVETICKER) the teams will meet directly.
