This is very sad news that reached us on Tuesday January 27, 2026. Gisèle Maurin59, died after a long illness. Gigi, for close friends, was a sportive in the soul.
Before getting started badminton in Cliff (Calvados), where she met Lionel, her future husband, she practiced athletics in Trun and handball in Falaise.
In these individual and team sports, where she also shone through her technical qualities, it was above all her virtues of generosity which would later make her the fighter and fierce competitor that we know, racket in hand.
On the court, the Falaisienne did not give up, with an unfailing mentality. Over all these years, this heightened passion has taken her to the six corners of France but also to Europe and even the world!
An example of longevity
Gisèle Maurin was also an example of longevity since she played for a long time in the veteran ranks. She lined up in singles, doubles or mixed.
Competitions, tournaments, championships, she will have competed in them. She will have won victories and titles. She also knew how to build on defeats… just to bounce back better.
With a fine track record (in addition to departmental and regional titles), it should be remembered that Gisèle Maurin was 42nd French player and several times French champion, notably in mixed with her brother-in-law Laurent Maurin, category B. Among veterans, between 2002 and 2018, from Angers to Quimperlé, she won 2 titles in women’s doubles, 8 silver medals (women’s and mixed doubles) and 7 medals bronze (women’s and mixed doubles).
Gisèle Maurin loved competition but she had another side: a talent scout. For more than three decades, alongside Lionel, she trained numerous players. The dynamic couple did not count their time on the roads of France and Navarre to take them to competitions. With his passion deep in his heart, he allowed young people to shine in badminton.
Another major advantage. The art of organizing competitions with Lionel. Like this tournament entitled “The Conqueror’s Ruffles”, which was so close to his heart, in the city’s 3 gymnasiums during the month of June.
Badminton, where she will have seen players pass through, was the second family of Gisèle with a big heart. With Lionel, she had two boys, Aurélien and Corentin, to whom they passed on the driving bug. Long president of the Falais section, Lionel handed over to… Gisèle a few years ago.
Good humor, kindness, simplicity…
With his death, three decades come to the surface. Quickly, natural bonds were forged with Gisèle but also Lionel, a golden couple.
To define Gisèle is to easily recognize her joy of life, good humor, kindness, simplicity and humility, among others. Like Lionel, she knew how to transmit her passion. A passion in writing, then via the computer, to discuss the results of this or that competition.
This anecdote with an early volunteer correspondent directs us towards two other qualities: loyalty and perseverance. Over the years, she never stopped communicating about her “baby”.
During our visits to the William the Conqueror room, the welcome was always materialized by a smile. She shared his happiness, like no other. Badminton was at the center of the topics but we could also remake the world, sitting on a bench.
A beautiful person
These special moments, it is certain, will remain forever engraved in our memory. Gisèle Maurin was one of those people you love to meet. She was quite simply a beautiful person, highly esteemed, who cannot be forgotten.
The funeral of Gisèle Maurin was celebrated on Tuesday February 3 at the Notre-Dame-de-Guibray church in Falaise. To her husband Lionel, her children Aurélien and Corentin, her family and friends, the editorial staff of Nouvelles de Falaise presents its most sincere condolences.
According to her last wishes, Gisèle Maurin did not want any plaques or flowers, simply donations for her favorite club, ESF badminton. Here is the link to the online prize pool: https://www.leetchi.com/fr/c/lheritage-de-gigi-3452456?utm_source=copylink&utm_medium=social_sharing
