Gerstner Breaks McGill Long Jump Record

(FRENCH VERSION SUIT)

WINNIPEG — Robert Gerstner rewrote the McGill men’s track and field record book last weekend. The 23-year-old native of East St. PaulMan., captured gold in the men’s long jump at the Jim Daly Bison Classic on Jan. 30, soaring 7.32 metres to break a 30-year-old McGill indoor record.

His jump qualified for nationals and eclipsed the previous school mark of 7.20m, set in 1996 by Maurice Ennis at McGill’s Tomlinson Fieldhouse. Gerstner won the event decisively, not far from his hometown, finishing well ahead of Alberta Golden Bears teammates Isiah Baker (7.12 m) and bolu Ario (7.01 m).

Competing in his second season with the Redbirds, Gerstner enrolled at McGill in 2024 after earning his undergraduate degree at Western University in London, Ont. He is currently completing a master’s degree in physics.

Gerstner’s performance marked the fourth McGill school record to fall during the 2025–26 indoor season. Earlier this year, Luca Nicoletti set a new standard in the 300m (34.11) on Nov. 29 at Tomlinson Fieldhouse, while the Redbirds relay teams broke school records in both the 4x800m (7:34.76) and 4x200m (1:27.63) on Jan. 23, also at Tomlinson.

The season continues this weekend with McGill competing at the Valentine’s Day Classic in Boston.
