GUY ROUX (87), the legendary French football coach, again provoked reactions with his statements about women’s football. “A woman has a wider pelvis and was created to give birth to children. And football is not for wide pelvises. I have the utmost respect for young women who play the sport they love,” said Roux in an interview with the Flash East.
“But if you ask me if women’s games are attractive, I will point you to lower league games played in front of 800 spectators,” added Roux, who played as a midfielder for Auxerre from 1954 and was a player-coach until 1970. He then became the head coach of that club and led it until 2005.

Roux played in the fourth French league with Auxerre, and his greatest achievements were four trophies from the French Cup (1994, 1996, 2003 and 2005). He was also the champion of the French league (1996) and the winner of the Intertoto Cup (1998). Along with Auxerre, he briefly managed Lens (2007), with whom he also won the Intertoto Cup.
It’s not his first time
This is not Roux’s first controversial comment, the French media point out. Last May, at French striker Djibril Cissé’s farewell match which brought together former players, Roux declared: “Do you want a bold comparison? It looks like a women’s football match”.
Expert commentator suspended after statement
Roux is not the only one who has made inappropriate statements in recent days. Last Saturday, during the match between Paris FC and Marseille, Daniel Bravo, expert commentator for beIN Sports, commented on Gaëtane Thiney in the stands: “He’s not following very closely, he’s probably talking about underwear…”. The former French national team member was suspended by the television company after that statement.
