BADMINTON Fiji’s team is preparing to compete at the VICTOR Oceania Individual Championships from February 8-12, 2026, at the North Harbour Badminton Centre in Auckland, New Zealand.
The team, consisting of 12 athletes, eight men and four women, will gain valuable experience as many players make their international debut.
“This tournament will be a great exposure for our players, many of whom have not yet participated in international competition,” said Abel Caine, the new president of Badminton Fiji and team manager for the event.
“Our aim is to get them used to playing on the international stage and to test their skills against top competition. This will help us gauge where they stand and what improvements are needed as we prepare for the upcoming Pacific Games and Olympic Games.”
In preparation for the tournament, Caine is receiving valuable support from former national badminton representatives Bertie Moliere and Liam Fong, both gold medallists and legends of Fiji badminton.
They have generously offered their expertise, providing pre-tournament coaching and guidance to the team’s players, including early preparation for athlete Aidan Kane.
Coached by Steven Low, a Badminton World Federation Level 1 and Oceania Sports Education Program educator, the team is ready to build momentum.
Admission to the event is free, and Fijians in Auckland, especially in North Harbour, are encouraged to come out in support to boost the players’ morale.
Fiji has historically been a powerhouse in badminton within the Pacific region.
“This competition marks the beginning of our roadmap to re-establish Fiji’s dominance in the sport,” Caine said.
With strong preparation and community support, the team hopes to make a significant impact on the international scene.
