The first medal decisions were made on the third day of the German Badminton Championships in Cloppenburg (Lower Saxony). The biggest surprise came in the men’s doubles.
In the quarterfinals, 1st seed Bjarne Geiss (Wittorf) and Jones Jansen (Wipperfeld) lost to Jonathan Dresp (Wittorf) and Simon Krax (Dortelweil) in close three sets (21-14, 14-21, 17-21). Dresp and Krax marched even further in the evening and secured their place in the final on Sunday by beating Marvin Datko (Saarbrücken) and Aaron Sonnenschein (Wipperfeld). There they meet Michael Fuchs and Marvin Seidel (both Saarbrücken). Fuchs, back on the DM stage after seven years, could win his tenth German championship title.
Yvonne Li (Dortelweil) and Isabel Lohau (Saarbrücken) have a total of 14 titles in the DM statistics. Lohau originally wanted to compete with Stine Küspert, but she is out due to injury. Li stepped in – and the duo worked. With a two-set win against defending champions Leona Michalski (Refrath) and Thuc Nguyen (Wipperfeld), Li and Lohau are fighting for the title on Sunday. In the final they will meet the top seeds Selin Hübsch (Refrath) and Amelie Lehmann (Trittau).
Yvonne Li has the chance to win two championship titles on Sunday. In the women’s singles final she will face Miranda Wilson (Refrath). Wilson won a repeat of last year’s final against Brid Stepper (Lüdinghausen) in the semifinals – 22-20, 21-12. Two titles are also possible for Marvin Seidel, Simon Krax and Amelie Lehmann. Krax/Lehmann clearly prevailed in the quarterfinals against Dresp/Hübsch in two sets (21-11, 21-14). Seidel/Nguyen, who won against Patrick and Franziska Volkmann (21-8, 21-6), are waiting in the final.
Brian Holtschke (Refrath) delivered a double three-set show in the men’s singles. In the quarterfinals he fended off match points against Hauke Graalmann (Wittorf) and ultimately won the thriller 21-23, 21-16, 23-21. Holtschke also went the full distance in the semi-final against Justin Seibel (Neuhausen) – 21-15, 15-21, 21-18. Holtschke, who is in second place, is fighting for his first DM title in the final. Two-time individual champion Matthias Kicklitz is waiting.
