Struff set the course for victory early on with a double break. Varillas surprisingly played for the actual Peruvian number one Ignacio Buse, who switched to doubles due to lack of fitness. The South American, once 60th but currently only 284th in the world rankings, was left behind against the calm Struff.

In the afternoon, Yannick Hanfmann had once again proven that he can be relied on in the Davis Cup: The veteran lived up to his role as favorite against 21-year-old Gonzalo Bueno and defeated number 217 in the world rankings 6:4, 6:4. Hanfmann won the last six of a total of seven games for Germany. Against Bueno, the 34-year-old acted with a low margin of error right from the start – and especially confidently on his own serve.

Thanks to the victorious veterans, the top pair of Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz could complete the first of two steps to the final tournament in Bologna on Saturday (1 p.m.). If this does not succeed, Hanfmann and Struff then have the chance to book the ticket for the second round of the Davis Cup in September.
