Bundesliga MD20: Dortmund & Stuttgart Win | Sunday Results

Borussia Dortmund – 1. FC Heidenheim 3:2 (1:1)

Borussia Dortmund beat 1. FC Heidenheim 3-2 (1-1) in front of 81,365 spectators on matchday 20 of the Bundesliga at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund. Waldemar Anton gave Dortmund the lead shortly before the end of the first half, but Julian Niehues equalized shortly afterwards (45th + 5). At the beginning of the second half, Niehues scored again and temporarily put Heidenheim in front. However, Dortmund equalized again with a penalty goal from Serhou Guirassy in the 68th minute. Just two minutes later, Guirassy scored again. However, it was no longer enough for BVB to make it 4-2 – Guirassy missed a penalty in the 85th minute.

It is Dortmund’s fifth Bundesliga home win in a row. BVB remains in second place in the table and, with 45 points from 20 games, is doing better than it has in years. Dortmund reduced the gap to league leaders Bayern from eleven points to six within a week. The top game between Dortmund and FC Bayern is scheduled for February 28th.

Heidenheim is bottom of the table and is already five points behind relegation place 16. Coach Frank Schmidt’s team has been without a win for two months.

VfB Stuttgart – SC Freiburg 1:0 (0:0)

The VfB Stuttgart celebrated the hoped-for victory in the fight for the Champions League places thanks to joker Ermedin Demirović. The cup winners deservedly won 1-0 (0-0) against SC Freiburg and moved up to fourth place in the Bundesliga table. Former Freiburg player Demirović, who had just come on as a substitute, scored the celebrated winning goal with a volley in the 90th minute in the Baden-Württemberg derby.

VfB had a lot of ball possession and the better chances in the Baden-Württemberg duel. What he lacked for a long time in front of 60,000 spectators was efficiency – before Joker Demirović struck in the 90th minute. Previously, Freiburg could rely primarily on their goalkeeper Noah Atubolu.

Stuttgart were the much more active team in the first half. Apart from a long-range shot from Yuito Suzuki (4th) and a hit to the side of the net from Derry Scherhant (43rd), the guests rarely appeared in front. Defensively, Freiburg were initially quite compact, but gradually they came under increasing pressure. After SC keeper Atubolu parried a header from VfB defender Josha Vagnoman (20th), Deniz Undav came into focus.

Stuttgart National striker looked for one finish after another. Freiburg’s defense chief Matthias Ginter once saved a shot from the 29-year-old just in front of the line (28th), a little later Undav was unable to take advantage of a serious mistake in Baden’s build-up play (32nd). Nikolas Nartey was again denied by Atubolu in the 42nd minute. Then suddenly VfB goalkeeper Alexander Nübel made another miss, which had no further consequences apart from a Freiburg corner (44th). In the final minutes the hosts worked again to make it 1-0, but they continued to have no luck in front of the opponent’s goal. When everything pointed to a draw, substitute Demirović scored the decisive goal to win.
