Benfica vs Sporting: Futsal Rivalry & Fan Reactions

The futsal classic between Sporting and Benfica was marked by scenes of violence near the Alvalade stadium, in Lisbon. Two fans suffered minor injuries and 124 were detained.

Given the number of prisoners and the risk of clashes, fans were divided at the court hearings. This Friday, detainees linked to Benfica will be brought before a judge at the Justice Campus and on Monday, Sporting fans will be brought to justice.

Clashes between fans occurred before the start of the futsal game on Thursday and ended with the arrest of 124 people (63 Benfica fans and 61 Sporting fans). The detainees are suspected of committing the crime of participating in a fight and throwing pyrotechnic items.

Vítor Patrica, PSP commissioner, guarantees that there were no arrests “by dragging” and that all 124 detainees were involved in the clashes.

The Portuguese Football Federation made it known, in a statement, that it “determined the establishment of an investigation process to determine responsibility for the incidents that occurred on Thursday night”.
