Belichick’s Mistake: A Costly Lesson Learned

Rather than delving into the names of those who will be announced on Feb. 5 as members of the 2026 class of inductees, what caught the attention was the news that head coach Bill Belichick, who guided the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles alongside legendary quarterback Tom Brady, was not going to be welcomed to Canton in his first year of eligibility.

It was the ESPN network which, citing four separate sources familiar with the selection process, launched this stone in the pond in recent days.

According to their reports, Belichcik was unable to garner the 40 out of 50 votes needed for entry in his first year of eligibility into the Football Hall of Fame.

How is it that the head coach who won the most playoff games (31) in NFL history in addition to being co-leader in most championships (six) and third all-time in regular season victories (302) was not accepted in his first year of eligibility?

This raised the ire of countless people in the world of football, starting with Tom Brady himself, who did not hesitate to fiercely criticize this decision.

“I don’t understand it. I was with him every day. If he’s not in his first year, there’s no coach who should be. This is completely ridiculous, because there are people who deserve it. He’s incredible. There is no coach I would rather play for. If I had to choose a coach to win a Super Bowl in a given season, I would take Bill Belichick. That’s it,” Brady argued during an appearance on a sports radio station in Seattle.

Even Patriots owner Robert Kraft, with whom Belichick had a more rocky relationship in recent years, was quick to say that Hall of Fame decision-makers had erred on the issue.

The relationship may have become more complex over the years between the two men, but Robert Kraft fiercely defended Belichick's candidacy for the Hall of Fame.

“Regardless of perceptions about the personal differences between Bill and me, I firmly believe that Bill’s record and body of work speaks for itself. As head coach of the Patriots for two decades, he set a standard of excellence on the field and in preparation, in addition to maintaining sustained success in the NFL. He is the best coach of all time and he unequivocally deserves to be a unanimous choice for the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility,” Kraft told the Associated Press.

Even Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and face of the NFL Patrick Mahomes didn’t hesitate to call the decision insane while saying he was unable to understand how all this was possible via his social media account.

Politics taken into account

Brady, Kraft and Mahomes are all right. From a 100% sporting point of view, it is completely incomprehensible that Belichick was not admitted to this 2026 vintage. No coach from this era of football comes close to his level. Moreover, it seems that Belichick himself was surprised to receive the call from Canton to be told that his induction would have to wait.

So how come the architect of the Patriots’ success wasn’t welcomed in Canton? It appears to be for reasons of football politics, an initiative spearheaded by former Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts general manager Bill Polian.

In 2007, Bill Belichick was at the center of the turmoil linked to the scandal dubbed “Spygate”.

According to what ESPN revealed, one of the people called to vote claimed that Polian told some colleagues that he believed Belichick should wait a year before his introduction as penance for the two cheating scandals that have splashed the Patriots, namely “Spygate” (theft of signals from opponents in 2007) and “Deflategate” (deflated ball during the American finale of the 2014 season).

It was especially for that of 2007 that Belichick was in the spotlight, which earned him a fine of $500,000.

Polian has since disputed the accusations, even stating that he voted for the current head coach of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels.

The fact remains that those called to choose had no sporting reason to postpone Belichick’s football immortal status for a year. And by denying that they wanted to lecture him, they only make themselves look worse, because there is no other reason to explain this ridiculous situation. And, given that Belichick has already paid for this mistake, was this lesson of good conscience really justified?

Bill Belichick is the third coach in history to have 300 regular season victories. To this must be added a record 31 playoff wins.

If you are for refusing to open the doors of the Hall of Fame to the best head coach of this generation in his first year of eligibility, at least be frank to say that you wanted to reproach him.

This situation also ensures that the expected induction of stars Drew Brees and Larry Fitzgerald will inevitably be with this omission of Belichick. A real fiasco for decision-makers in Canton.
