FIBA Basketball Champions League, which has been implemented since the 2016-17 season, has aimed to achieve certain goals since its establishment. These goals were to ensure that more talent in Europe had a chance at an international tournament, to help more clubs test themselves in an international tournament, and to expand to as many countries as possible in Europe.

The Basketball Champions League, which is currently in its tenth season, has achieved the main goals it set out so far.

This year, nine different countries are represented in the Round of 16 for the second time in a row. Therefore, the Basketball Champions League has recently been opened to more markets in Europe compared to the recent past.

Representatives of various countries are currently doing their best to reach the quarter-finals of the Round of 16.

Of course, Türkiye is one of the most prominent countries in this field.

Diversity in the Basketball Champions League

Seven different countries were represented in the Round of 16 of the 2016-17 season, the first season of the FIBA Basketball Champions League. Three teams each from Türkiye, Greece, Italy and France took part in the Round of 16. Two teams from Germany and one each from Lithuania and Spain competed in the Round of 16.

In the last 16 rounds of the 2017-18 season, this number increased to eight. The inclusion of the Czech Republic and Poland greatly helped to increase the number of countries represented, despite the absence of Italy.

In the 2018-19 season, this number increased to exactly 10. 11 different countries were represented in the Round of 16 in the 2019-20 season, 12 in the 2020-21 season, and 11 again in the 2021-22 season. However, there was a decline in the following two seasons.

Seven different countries were represented in the last 16 rounds of the 2022-23 season and eight different countries were represented in the last 16 rounds of the 2023-24 season. Last season, this number increased from eight to nine.

When we look at this season, we see that the same figure is maintained. This season, just like last year, a total of nine countries (Turkey, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Greece, Lithuania, Israel) are represented in the Round of 16.

This year, our representatives Galatasaray MCT Technic and TOFAŞ are representing our country in the Round of 16.

Türkiye and Spain Compete for the Top

When we look at the nine seasons of the FIBA Basketball Champions League so far, Türkiye and Spain are in a fierce competition in one field. Türkiye and Spain have been represented in the Round of 16 26 times in the nine-year history of the league. As such, there is a serious difference between the third and the third.

Türkiye and Spain are followed by France, which has been represented in the Round of 16 19 times. Greece ranks fourth with 17, and Germany ranks fifth with 13.

Of course, all these countries we have listed have a deep-rooted basketball tradition. On the other hand, countries such as Czechia, Hungary and Belgium started to take part in the Round of 16 more than in the past. This is, of course, a clear indication that the Basketball Champions League’s goal of ‘expanding to more countries’ is progressing successfully.
