Liverpool have made an attempt to bring Lutsharel Geertruida (Sunderland) to Anfield. That’s what Arne Slot, manager of The Redsduring a press moment of the English club.
Due to the persistent injury problems in the rearguard, Slot would have liked to add an extra defender. “I think I already said that we wanted to strengthen the selection. I was certainly not the only one who wanted that.”
“Ultimately, it always comes down to the availability of the right players. We also have discussions about what is good for the short and long term of the club,” Slot continues. The intended arrival of Geertruida turned out to be too complex.
25-year-old Geertruida plays on loan for Sunderland, but is still owned by RB Leipzig. In the end, Liverpool did not make a single winter transfer.
Instead, the current number six of the Premier League has already bought a defender for the summer of 2026. Jérémy Jacquet will then come over from Stade Rennes for at least 63 million euros.
Slot is happy that Liverpool have signed Jacquet. “We think he is a very good asset for the future of this club.”
“I am very happy with Liverpool’s current selection, but it is clear that we have several players with long-term injuries. That is why we tried to strengthen the group during the winter break and the player you mentioned (Geertruida, ed.) was ultimately unavailable,” Slot admits.
