Ange Postecoglou has drawn a firm line under speculation of a Celtic return, despite the affection that still binds him to the club. Speaking on the Stick To Football podcast, the former manager reflected warmly on his two year spell in Glasgow, yet made it clear that nostalgia will not dictate his next move.
“I loved Celtic, it’s a wonderful football club,” he said. “If I was younger, I probably would have stayed there longer. I probably would have stayed there three, four years.
“I think I could have made progress with them in Europe but at the time, it had taken me a long time to get to this sort of space, and the opportunity to join Tottenham was too good.”
Those years between 2021 and 2023 reshaped Celtic’s tempo and belief. Domestic dominance was restored and European ambition rekindled. However, Postecoglou’s journey has rarely involved retracing steps.
“In terms of going back, I don’t go back. I just don’t think that’s kind of been my career. Whatever the next step is, it’ll be something new, somewhere I can make an impact in, somewhere I can win things, but it doesn’t diminish the affection I have for Celtic.
“It was a great experience for two years, to be within a community that’s just so passionate. I look back on it fondly, but I won’t go back. I don’t think that’s how my career’s played out.”
For Postecoglou, the next chapter must align with his methods. “If a club starts talking to me, it’s not like I’m going to walk in and do things differently,” he said. “Do they really want what I have to offer?
“I’m going to play this way, I’m going to train this way and I want to win things. I’ve done that my whole career.”
Celtic supporters may cherish the memory, but any return now appears closed. His path points forward.
