Two-time Australian Open champion, Spaniard Rafael Nadal — who retired from tennis in 2024 — believes that world number one, Carlos Alcaraz, 22, is the absolute favorite in the final of this edition of the tournament, but he wouldn’t be surprised if Novak Djokovic, 38, his old rival, caused a “zebra”. On Canal Nove, the 39-year-old former tennis player with 22 Grand Slam titles under his belt declared his support for his fellow countryman.

— I think the favorite is Carlos. He is young, has energy and is at the peak of his career. But, I mean, Novak is Novak. He is a very special player. I don’t know if Novak has ever lost a final here. It’s always a challenge and he likes challenges. [Mas] my favorite is Carlos — said Nadal, who is expected to attend the decisive match of the championship in Melbourne, Australia, this Sunday (1).
In separate statements to the Melbourne Age newspaper, Nadal said it was “positive” to have someone Djokovic’s age competing with Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Djokovic surprised the 24-year-old Sinner in the semifinals, in a match played over five sets, guaranteeing a place in his 11th Australian Open final. He has won all 10 previous finals.

— When you enjoy doing this, if you’re not injured and if you’re not too mentally tired, why wouldn’t you be here? I think Djokovic is a positive example of commitment and resilience,” he said. — I mean, Novak, for obvious reasons, is not at the peak of his form, but he is still very, very competitive at an age where it is difficult to be so competitive. Therefore, all my respect.
Djokovic is looking to become the oldest man to win the Australian Open. Ken Rosewall, 37, won the title in 1972.
He is also keen to finally win a record 25th Grand Slam title and surpass Margaret Court, who is also expected to be at Rod Laver Arena this Sunday (1). The match is scheduled for 5:30 am, Brasília time.
This will be Alcaraz’s first final at the Australian Open.
