Joshua Zirkzee has scored again at Old Trafford, the home base of Manchester United. The Dutch striker had not been able to do that since last February, but in the Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers he scored the opening goal after just under half an hour with a deflected shot.
However, that did not inspire United to a victory over Wolves, which is dismal at the bottom of the Premier League and only collected its third point. The visitors reached 1-1 before half time and managed to tie the match.
In North London, leader Arsenal recorded an important 4-1 victory over Aston Villa, the number three in the rankings, which is in top form. The ‘Villans’ had won their previous eleven matches in all competitions.
After an even first half, Arsenal took the lead shortly after halftime through Gabriel’s header from a corner. That meant the seventeenth goal for the club from a corner situation this calendar year, just one less than that all-time record in de Premier League (18 van Manchester United in 2012).
Arsenal pressed on after that opening goal and took a large 3-0 lead after 69 minutes of play thanks to goals from Martin Zubimendi and Leandro Trossard. This made it clear that Arsenal will start the new calendar year as top of the table.
Shortly before the end, Gabriel Jesus even made it 4-0, after which Ollie Watkins scored the honorary goal on behalf of Villa (4-1).
Kluivert and Veltman also score
Furthermore, two Dutchmen gave their club a point in the Premier League tonight. On behalf of Bournemouth, Justin Kluivert made it 2-2 on a visit to Chelsea.
Kluivert will probably not score a simpler goal anytime soon. He appeared at the far post during an extended throw-in, where he was able to tap the ball into an almost empty goal. The goal was very welcome for the Dutch international, who scored twelve times last season, but now only has two goals.
In addition, Joël Veltman took a leading role at Brighton. In an away match at West Ham United, he also scored the 2-2 from a corner kick, which was also the final score there.
