It wasn’t that long ago that there were always German championships: Union Lüdinghausen Festival. But with the departure of Yvonne Li and Linda Efler (who is now back but no longer takes part in national title fights), there was nothing left for the zero eights to win at the DM. Since 2021 – when Li won gold in the singles, Efler won gold in the doubles and silver in the mixed doubles and Max Weißkirchen won two bronze medals (singles/mixed) – the Unionists have been waiting for a medal. Perhaps the five-year dry spell will end at the 74th edition starting Thursday in Cloppenburg, Lower Saxony.
