YouTube TV Sports Plan & Global Rights Race

As YouTube, which has financial power, formalizes the launch of a paid sports plan, the competitive landscape in the global sports broadcasting rights market is attracting attention again. However, there are also predictions that immediate changes in the market will be limited as most of the broadcasting rights contracts for major leagues have already been concluded.

YouTube CEO Neil Mohan announced on the company’s blog on the 22nd that it plans to sequentially introduce more than 10 rate plans in each field along with a fully customized multi-view function to YouTube TV.

◆’Ambitious’ to dominate sports networks with financial power

Among these, the ‘YouTube TV Sports Plan’ was selected as the core product and explained that it would provide access to major sports networks such as FS1 and ESPN Unlimited.

CEO Mohan also mentioned the possibility of combining additional packages such as NFL Sunday Ticket and Red Zone. Sports plan subscribers can use existing features such as unlimited DVR, multi-view, key play highlights, and fantasy view.

YouTube TV, which currently provides services only in the United States, exclusively offers NFL Sunday Ticket for $34.50 per month, allowing users to watch NFL games that are not scheduled on local broadcasts. However, the specific release date and price of the sports plan have not yet been disclosed.

Concerns are also being raised that this move could further heat up competition as global platforms enter the sports broadcasting rights market. In Korea, major video streaming platforms such as SOOP, Naver Chizijik, and Coupang Play are actively seeking to secure sports broadcasting rights.

The industry pays attention to YouTube’s financial power. It is reported that the cumulative amount paid by YouTube to creators and media companies over the past four years has exceeded $100 billion. In the global sports broadcasting rights market, there have already been cases where a single platform secures global broadcasting rights, such as Apple TV Plus’ exclusive contract with the US professional soccer MLS.

◆”Many games have already been contracted…moving to technology competition”

However, there is also a view that it is difficult for YouTube TV to enter the market to make a big change in a short period of time. This is because, in the case of major global sporting events, broadcasting rights contracts are concluded on a multi-year basis, so there is not much room for new operators to enter the market.

An industry official said, “Contracts have already been signed for most major global sporting events,” and added, “Initially, the impact may be limited, focusing on some sports targeting enthusiasts.”

Competition for broadcasting rights in the domestic market is already fierce. Coupang Play is broadcasting over 50 leagues and competitions, including EPL and F1, as well as exclusive Korean broadcasting rights for the NBA 2025-26 season. Naver Chizizik has secured the rights to broadcast the Olympics and World Cup, and SOOP and Teaving are also in charge of broadcasting major sports such as the AFC Champions League, WKBL, KBO League, and WBC, respectively.

Another industry insider said, “Recently, broadcasting quality and technology have become more important criteria for judgment than simply offering a high price,” and added, “How elaborately multi-view, data visualization, and user experience can be implemented is emerging as a key factor in competition for broadcasting rights.”
