Luis Arráez is still without a contract and Major League training camps are about to begin. Not even the three batting titles he has in his career have caused the utility man to receive generous offers in free agency.
The 28-year-old Venezuelan has considerably lowered his value in the market, at a time when strong players, with the ability to hit extra bases, are rewarded more, as opposed to hitters who limit themselves to hitting hits.
Arráez is the best contact hitter in the Major Leagues, but that is not enough in modern baseball. He has not received offers for more than three seasons and many analysts believe that the best thing for him is to sign for one year, look for a good season in 2026 and achieve a multi-year contract prior to the 2027 campaign.
The New York Yankees have moved little in the market this offseason and their general manager, Brian Cashman, has been criticized for the few additions the club has had. Adding a bat like Luis Arráez would allow the team to have a contact player at the top of the lineup.
Below, we look at five reasons why the Yankees should sign Luis Arráez in free agency.
1. Your contact
Luis Arráez is one of the hitters who strikes out the least in the Major Leagues. He struck out just 21 times in 675 plate appearances last year with the San Diego Padres and a player with those characteristics cannot be overlooked in a lineup. Manager Aaron Boone could use him at the top of the lineup, either as a leadoff or second hitter. Then Cody Bellinger and Aaron Judge would be in charge of bringing it to the plate with the power that characterizes them.
2. His batting titles

Aaron Judge is coming off winning the American League batting title in 2025, with his .321 average. One motivation would be to add Arráez, who has won three batting titles in his career with three different teams. Although in modern baseball not much attention is paid to batting average, for a traditional team like the Yankees it is positive to have a slugger with his characteristics.
3. Can play multiple positions

Although Arráez’s glove is not above average in the Major Leagues, the Venezuelan can play several infield positions, although the second and first bases are the ones he is best at. Jazz Chisholm Jr. should be the Yankees’ starting second baseman, but it’s always good to have a player who can be versatile on defense.
4. He could be motivated to increase his extra-base hits.
Arráez knows that he must increase his quota of hits of more than one base in order to become a star and seek a million-dollar contract. This has happened with other infielders, who began their careers with few doubles and home runs and then increased those numbers. A clear example is that of José Altuve, who did it and is now a star. Playing for the Yankees, a scenario that is good for left-handed hitters, is another advantage he would have in the Bronx.
5. He is a committed player
Since he debuted in the Major Leagues, Arráez has always been considered a dedicated hitter, who spends many hours improving the details of his game and always stays away from controversy. This is worth a lot for an organization like that of the Yankees, so the Venezuelan would fit perfectly into the club’s work plan for 2026.
