The day after its defeat in the Spanish Super Cup final against FC Barcelona (2-3), Real Madrid announced this Monday, January 12, the departure of its coach Xabi Alonso after only eight months on the Madrid bench, and his replacement by Álvaro Arbeloa. “Real Madrid announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his mandate as first team coach,” the club said in a brief statement. Former Spanish defender Álvaro Arbeloa, world champion in 2010 alongside Xabi Alonso and until now at the head of the reserve team, will replace him on the bench, Real has already announced in a second press release.
